Long Island Environmental Activist (Paid Internship with Career Potential)

***COVID-19 CLAUSE: Given the face-to-face nature of our work, our field operation is suspended until further notice. However, with hope, we are still recruiting for the late spring/summer so that when* Social Distancing* is uplifted we can have momentum for making sure our public health and environment is still at a top priority for our LI, NYS, and our Nation. For now, thank you for your patience and I look forward to meeting y’all (kind of) face-to-face for first interviews (ideally) on ZOOM. Peace & Stay Safe - Rachel Zacharczyk, Canvass Director, CCE

Since 1985, Citizens Campaign for the Environment has been on the forefront of fighting for the protection of Long Island's air and water resources through grassroots canvassing and campaigning. The rapid degradation of coastal habitats, waterways, and drinking water across Long IslandI is concerning for ourselves and our future generations. So on a local, statewide, and national level, we advocate for the maintenance and preservation of open space/wildlife habitats, the elimination of toxins from our water supply, and the implementation of cleaner/environmentally sustainable practices. We are looking for folks who are passionate about and committed to being leaders in educating, activating, and empowering local citizens to become a united and effective voice on Long Island’s environmental politics.
Right now, we are pushing for support in banning neonicotinoids (or neonics). These particular pesticides are linked to massive honey bee die-offs. The colony collapse of these pollinators is putting our agricultural industry at risk. Additionally, neonics have been found in New York streams at toxic levels. We are working towards passing and implementing the Birds and Bees Protection Act so that a ban on these pesticides is enacted so we can save the food industry, our public health, and our bees!
We value this position to be an opportunity for all, therefore, a college education is helpful but never required. This position is perfect for students and non-students alike of all backgrounds, studies, interests, and walks of life! Many common ones include political-science, environmental studies, psychology, and the social sciences/humanities; but everyone is welcome; the more perspectives the better! Regardless of your background coming in, we are looking for folks who are self motivated individuals that want to take initiative in stepping up and being leaders towards making a difference. Beyond the initial internship, there is potential for long term growth/full-time employment.
