The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery (GFEMS) is a bold public-private partnership that seeks to catalyze and coordinate a coherent global strategy to end modern slavery. Our mission is to end modern slavery by making it economically unprofitable.  
GFEMS makes grants across sectors and geographies with a focus on three core funding themes: rule of law, business engagement, and sustaining freedom.  The Fund’s strategy also includes the development of public-private investments across key industries and innovative approaches to evaluating what works in reducing the prevalence of modern slavery. Role Description 
The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery is seeking a Summer Strategy & Design Intern. The primary responsibility of the Intern will be to create scoping reports using desk- and field-based research to support development of the GFEMS pipeline of programming opportunities. The Intern will use existing publications and interviews with key stakeholders to map systems of forced labor in specific geographies and sectors, in support of GFEMS’ mission to make slavery economically unprofitable. The purpose of each scoping study is to rapidly develop a sufficient, directionally correct understanding of the selected geo-sector to inform subsequent GFEMS decision-making concerning more extensive research or interventions. At the end of each scoping study, the Intern will have a superb understanding of the size and nature of the modern slavery problem in the selected geo-sector, the systems and stakeholders within it, and the current and potential efforts to address it.
The final product will be an internal document synthesizing the findings and recommended next steps. This output thus may lead to additional, longer-term formal research and full interventions.
 
The Intern will also contribute to and support (as needed) the general efforts of the Strategy & Design team to develop the Fund’s overall strategy and to progress early-stage ideas towards long-term, large-scale programs.

Qualifications
Interns need to be capable and comfortable conducting research in an evidence-scarce environment and making recommendations based on imperfect knowledge. Scoping often depends heavily on insights gained from interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders, and so the Intern needs to have excellent networking and interpersonal skills. Clear, concise, compelling writing and proficiency with Powerpoint or Word are essential. Though GFEMS is open to a range of backgrounds, a background in management consulting or social impact consulting would likely be relevant, as would another role in which action-oriented research, versatility, and a tolerance of ambiguity are required. Experience with one of GFEMS’ priority areas, such overseas labor recruitment, construction, manufacturing, domestic work, or sexual exploitation is a plus.
