Refugee and Asylee Social Services Intern



Position: Jersey City Internship
Reports to: Associate Director & Office Director
Term: Summer 2020
Hours and Length: 15 hours/week for a minimum of three months
Founded in 1946, Church World Service (CWS) provides life-saving humanitarian aid around the world, as well as refugee resettlement in the United States through 15 affiliates and seven CWS field offices. CWS Jersey City provides comprehensive case management and employment services aimed at empowering refugees, asylees, and asylum-seekers to build a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency and success in the United States. Services include basic needs support, case management, cultural orientation, health access assistance and intensive job preparation and placement services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with case management duties as assigned
  • Assist with filling out applications and forms in the CWS Jersey City office
  • Accompany clients to appointments at welfare and medical clinics
  • Complete case notes and other required documentation to track activities
  • Create resumes and assist clients with job search activities
  • Orient clients to their community
  • Teach individuals and families how to utilize public transportation
  • Help clients learn how to make appointments independently
  • Assist with classes in office when necessary
  • Provide support to other volunteer teachers to ensure a pleasant and productive learning environment
  • Substitute when regular volunteer teachers are not available
  • Front desk tasks
  • Answer phones
  • Take items to the post office
  • Greet clients when they come for services
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Acquire detailed knowledge of the U.S. refugee resettlement program;
  • Gain experience working in the case management field;
  • Acquire knowledge to navigate public benefits and community resources;
  • Gain experience teaching English and vocational lessons to adult ELL students;
  • Strengthen communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with clients, CWS staff, public agencies, community partners and volunteers;
  • Strengthen organizational and time management skills through balancing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
 REQUIREMENTS:
  • Undergraduate level studies in social sciences, international relations or a related field;
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, Arabic, or Turkish a plus;
  • Excellent attention to detail and effective communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment;
  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, and an unceasingly positive attitude;
  • Willing to learn about CWS history and philosophy;
  • Willing to adhere to CWS volunteer and workplace policies, including holding client confidentiality to the highest standard.
 
Please note applicants are required to have a university agreement from your current educational institution that indicates the internship would be related to your education or studies. This is an unpaid internship.
