Produce Project Intern

About Produce Project:
For 44 years, Capital Roots has worked to reduce the impact poor nutrition has had on public health in the Capital Region by organizing community food gardens, offering healthy food access, providing nutrition and horticulture education for all ages, and coordinating urban greening programs.
The Produce Project is a job training program which, since 2009, has engaged youth from Troy High School in the year-round production and sale of organic vegetables. With guidance from the program’s Farmer and Educator, students manage their crops from seed through sale, while earning a stipend and a food share to take home to their families.

Responsibilities include:
·        Work with Educator and Farmer to develop and facilitate workshops
·        Assist Educator in applying an activity-based curriculum focused on sustainable agriculture, productive communication, teamwork, and leadership.
·        Possible option to take on other research opportunities and projects that relate to Capital Roots mission, the Capital region, and the Produce Project
·        Opportunity to develop own project

Qualifications:
·        Has or wishes to acquire farming and teaching experience
·        Enjoys spending large amounts of time outdoors
·        Has an interest in community food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture
·        Is enthusiastic about empowering youth and working with high school students
·        Has a positive attitude and comfortable working with students of various backgrounds

Logistics:
·        This opportunity is available during all of our semesters. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.  This is an unpaid internship.
·        Hours flexible and remote opportunities can be made available
·        Time will be spent on the Produce Project Farm and the Capital Roots office both in Troy NY, and on field trips with the students
